April 5th, 2010Why People Switch to Debit Cards
Nowadays, more and more people have been switching from paying with a credit card to paying with a debit card because many people have realized that to use a credit card can put you into unwanted debt. Although money can be yours to spend via a cash withdrawal, personal checks, or your debit card, during this recession, many have begun using the latter more and more instead of making credit card purchases. So, let’s take a look at why so many people are switching to debit cards for their everyday purchases.
Unlike with credit cards, debit cards will only cover purchases when money is available to do so in the bank. In short, a debit card is just like cash and that money is automatically debited, or deducted, from your account after each transaction. This is unlike credit card spending, which allows a certain spending limit followed by installment payments to pay for charges later. A debit card does not offer this luxury. As a result, for most people, this means thinking twice before spending cash that will severely skew their budget.
What’s more, while using a debit card is essentially the same as using cash or a check, a debit card, most would argue, is much more convenient. Your debit card is linked directly to your bank account. Just like using a check, when you make a purchase, the amount you spend is automatically deducted from your account. You will save the time of writing out a check and the nuisance of running to the bank to take out cash or finding an atm machine to make a cash withdrawal. Debit cards, especially those with a credit card logo, can be used just about anywhere. While cash is also accepted just about everywhere, checks are not. For this reason, debit cards are especially handy when you are traveling and won’t be able to use checks.
Of course, there are still times when a debit card may not be accepted or may not be the best choice for your purchase. For instance, unlike what is offered with most major credit cards, cash advances or a line of credit is not offered to debit card holders. Therefore, when emergency cash is needed or when fast cash is needed to help a person survive until their next paycheck, a debit card is helpless obviously.
